History

What is now known as Glengarry Encore Education began in 2004 as Encore Seniors
Education (Alexandria Campus), started by Cornwall Encore with a grant from the Trillium
Foundation. Lee Cassidy, a past president of Cornwall Encore, was hired to create the
Glengarry Campus in Alexandria which she did with much success.

The Alexandria Campus was based at 7 Main St. and that address continued as home to
Glengarry Encore until May 2014, after which Encore moved to its present location at 212 Main
St. North as a tenant of Glengarry District High School.

As a branch of Cornwall Encore the Alexandria campus had its own steering committee headed
by Lee Cassidy (Field Co-ordinator) and included Bert van Barneveld (Chair), Gary Brennan, Bill
Buss, Hertha von Feldegg, Lionel Lustgarten, Margaret Mortimer, Sharon Rae, Patricia Vincent,
Inge Wiencke, Thelma Woosey and Sam Woosey.

Unfortunately Cornwall Encore did not want to give any fiscal responsibility to the Alexandria
Campus and consequently, as of May 1, 2006, the Alexandria Campus separated from
Cornwall to become a stand alone not-for-profit group under the name Glengarry Encore
Education Centre.
That first independent year was difficult, but under the guidance of a small group of dedicated
volunteers, Glengarry Encore managed to keep financially sound.
Glengarry Encore Education’s very first Board of Directors consisted of Thelma Woosey (Chair),
Marjorie Mertl (Secretary), Eric Oke (Treasurer), Bill Buss (Coordinator), Hertha Fellner von
Feldegg (Curriculum Chair), Sam Woosey ( Business Chair), and Dorothy Kreher (PR Chair).
As more volunteers joined contributing new ideas and many hours of work Glengarry Encore
Education has expanded to the successful organization it is today.
